Three years ago I met David Boxley, well known as a Native American carver living in our area. Jim and I visited his studio and he showed us the pieces he was carving in preparation for his wedding. Handling each with great pride he explained their significance.
He uncovered a large bentwood box he was carving and painting for his soon-to-be wife - he touched it gently and showed great pride in this special creation. He showed us the many gifts for various other relatives and friends ranging from boxes to masks. The wedding was going to be very traditional and giving gifts was part of the tradition.
At the time I was impressed with his talent and the beauty of his work as well as the sentiment and sense of tradition.
Recently I saw an article announcing that he and Lorene, now his wife, along with some of their family members had opened a gallery in Kingston, Washington.
I visited the gallery the next day it was open. Again I was impressed with David's work; the quality and obvious talent that it represented. I was even more impressed with Lorene who is a beautiful woman and very talented. She was amazingly warm and open. I felt welcome, I ended up making a purchase and I will return - often.
