Road Trip 2009: Montana into North Dakota

Montana; Big Sky Country and wide open spaces. Hwy 2 crosses Montana just south of the Canadian border. There are no big towns, just those that are bigger than others all stretched out along the Northern Railroad route.

We had a good day for the drive. There have been heavy rains but we had sunshine and big puffy clouds that left huge shadows moving over the landscape. At first Jim thought they were areas that had had fires but my theroy proved true as we got closer; clouds shadows.

We saw a lot of Pronghorns grazing along the highway as well as in the distance. They are beautiful and wonderful to watch as they float across the prairie.

The fox kits, a total of 5, were playing around their den opening, also near the highway. I wondered why the mother would build a den so close to the road but then realized that the plains, as far as we could see, were cultivated and while good for hunting, it was not a good place for a den. The uncut area along the fenceline, near the highway was perfect.

We've crossed into North Dakota and we're spending the night in Williston, North Dakota. It is a town with a healthy economy based on oil and farming/ranching but it is really hopping this weekend with a regional band competition, a rodeo and a car race. Williston is also a step back in time with very friendly people, ready to help but restaurants that serve iceberg lettuce salads with a selection of French, Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing. Great entres, including fresh Walleye, served with white toast as a garnish.
I asked a young woman who works at the hotel what we should be sure "not to miss" as we head east on HWY 2 tomorrow. Her response, "There's nothing interesting in North Dakota." Hopefully we'll prove her wrong.
We enjoyed our dinner, found a big field for Abby to run and we're back in our room for the evening.
